why does my Mac have to be connected to my IPhone ?

my laptop is already connected to the wifi, so why does it have to be conntected to my Iphone to be operational ? Was that a condition imposed by Apple?
Apart from this great inconvenience, I find it really helpful that I can answer messages right from my Mac.
